"Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things"

-The Sound of Music

Standing outside in the falling snow, with flakes falling on my lashes, naturally The Sound of Music drifted softly to my ears. Any song by Julie Andrews would certainly rank as one of my favorite things. However, I can't say that emerald green would have ever been among them. But after Pantone declared this shade the 2013 Color of the Year, I have to admit it's begun to grow on me. Perhaps I'll need a dress with green satin sashes to go with the snowflakes on my eyelashes…

If I were a glass half empty kind of girl, perhaps I'd tend to think that subliminial marketing at large was working. If something becomes ubiquitous, it's possible one develops an unconscious affinity for it. From apparel to home goods, this color is already popping up at every turn. I certainly didn't have to shop for long before finding my emerald top and nail polish.

But I tend to think that I'm a glass half full kind of girl. Perhaps it's the inherent qualities of the color green winning me over. Words like fresh and rejeuvenating certainly spring to mind.

Room-color-psychology

From home decorating tips to mainstream pop culture, much has been said about the psychology and the science of color. If Freshome is any authority on interior design, a green room will instill a calming effect, promoting security and comfort.

Moodring

And anyone who owned a mood ring during their adolesence might recognize that chart above. If green indicates a relaxed mood, I guess Kermit the Frog was right – "it's easy being green!"

Yes, I'm going to go the latter theory. On a wintry day in upstate New York this lush scene above certainly looks inviting. Perhaps I've just overlooked this particular shade of green.

So who's ready to kick off 2013 with a sewing project featuring the color fo the year?! Ali over at a2(w) is hosting a Quilt Challenge through March 8th. Don't worry, just quilt tops will suffice! As some of you may have already noticed, the quilting textile world has not quite caught up with fashion world so this particular shade of green is somewhat elusive. To help you out, I've put together some emerald fabrics. You'll find them currently featured on our Hawthorne Threads homepage.

Lindsay's Picks

We are happily sponsoring the challenge, and you'll want to head over here to see all of the great prizes!

LIndsay, What can be better than a redhead in a beautiful green top? One with green nails to match, I’d say!! My daughter’s hair is the same color as yours! What a great photograph…you should frame it!

Maybe this means we can finally get rid of those awful olive and lime greens!! BTW, Kermit always sang that “it isn’t easy being green”!
